On 4th April 2002, 101 years to the day after the doors of Whangarei Hospital officially opened for the first time, the doors opened again to a new look facility aimed at providing improved quality service to Northlanders.
The redevelopment included expansion of some key areas like the Emergency Dept, Intensive Care Unit and Imaging (including x-ray), a new Surgical Admission Unit and a new public cafe The new central sterilising unit was also opened in 2002, providing all areas of the hospital with a streamlined service and additional capacity.
