A major achievement in 2003 was the implementation of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Service (MRI), which was previously only available to Northlanders by travelling to Auckland. The service was introduced as a joint venture, with Northern Radiology providing the equipment and the Northland DHB providing the site.
Planning was underway to establish a single site breast screening and assessment centre at Whangarei Hospital in conjunction with Waitematā District Health Board.
