2009 - Stage 1 of Master Plan Underway | Special Care Baby Unit Upgraded

Stage one of the Whangarei Hospital Site Master Plan was underway. It would see the construction of a new 25-bed mental health in-patient unit, relocation of key support services, and demolishing old buildings.

Other capital activity included the extensive refurbishment work and upgrade of the Special Care Baby Unit at Whangarei Hospital. The $480,000 redevelopment delivered improved post-natal care and increased capacity for Northland babies and their mothers. It was designed to deliver specialised care for small, premature, and ill infants.
